Coastal Mountaineering

exploring BC's coastlines and mountain ranges

We try to do at least one significant expedition every year. Recently these have been in the form of week or month long sea-kayaking trips: the BC Central Coast in 2017; a solo three week trip through in the Discovery Islands for Anthony in Summer 2018; a 300km kayak through the Exuma Cays in the The Bahamas over New Years 2018.

Lots of gear day one of our Central Coast Expedition.

In Fall of 2019 we moved to New Zealand’s Golden Bay and managed to do a one month road trip around the South Island as well as numerous multi-day trekking and kayaking trips.

The next expedition trip we have planned is a two – to – three month kayak expedition in Baja, Mexico, paddling the length of the Gulf of California (also known as The Sea of Cortez and the Vermillion Sea). It was originally scheduled for winter 2020, but we have reluctantly elected to move it to winter 2021.

Our basic plan is to drive kayaks down to San Felipe, Mexico (near the northern end of the Sea of Cortez on the Baja Peninsula) and figure out someway to shuttle our truck. From there we paddle south for 1500km, circumnavigating as many of the off-shore islands as we can en route to Cabo san Lucas.

In Cabo we will decide based on time, weather, and sanity if we will attempt to paddle the west coast of the peninsula visiting the grey whale sanctuaries of Magdalena Bay and San Ignacio Lagoon on our way to Ojo de Liebre Lagoon!
